A chemical handling error triggered the emergency.
LA BISBAL DEL PENEDÈS, SPAIN — July 2026. A toxic cloud generated by a chemical reaction at a municipal swimming pool in Tarragona province has injured 17 people. Four were reported in serious condition, although authorities indicated that their lives were not in danger. Ten patients, including five minors, were transported to hospitals.
The incident occurred when a maintenance technician reportedly poured chlorine into the wrong storage tank. The resulting mixture released toxic fumes inside the facility, forcing an immediate evacuation. Firefighters established a security perimeter and began operations to neutralize the affected substances.
Local authorities initially advised residents to remain indoors, close doors and windows and avoid the area surrounding the pool. An emergency mobile alert was considered but ultimately ruled unnecessary after officials confirmed that the cloud had not significantly spread beyond the facility. Much of the gas dispersed within several hours.
Six firefighting units and seven ambulances were mobilized during the response. Specialists continued emptying and securing the chemical tanks after the injured had been treated. The municipal pool will remain closed until inspections confirm that the installation is completely safe.
A routine maintenance error turned a public swimming pool into a chemical emergency.
