The Cleaning Mistake That Can Permanently Damage Smart TVs

A familiar household product can ruin the screen.

Seoul | July 2026

One of the most common mistakes when cleaning a Smart TV is spraying water or cleaning solution directly onto the screen. The liquid can enter through the panel’s edges, damage internal components and leave permanent stains.

Window cleaners, alcohol, ammonia, soap and abrasive products can also remove the screen’s protective coating. Paper towels, sponges and rough cloths may produce microscopic scratches, while excessive pressure can damage pixels.

Manufacturers recommend turning off and unplugging the television before cleaning it with a clean, dry microfiber cloth. For persistent fingerprints, the cloth may be slightly dampened with water, but the liquid should never be applied directly to the screen.

The television must be completely dry before being reconnected. Following the manufacturer’s instructions is essential because OLED, LED and other panels may require different precautions.
