Spanish authorities seized nearly six tonnes of hashish after an armed pursuit exposed the escalating danger of maritime drug trafficking.
HUELVA, Spain — Ten suspected members of a drug-trafficking organization have been arrested following an armed attack on a Guardia Civil patrol boat off Spain’s southern coast. The joint operation with the Customs Surveillance Service resulted in the seizure of two high-speed vessels and 5,926 kilograms of hashish. One suspect suffered a gunshot wound during the confrontation.
The incident began overnight between August 17 and 18, when officers pursued a semi-rigid vessel suspected of carrying narcotics near Huelva. According to the Guardia Civil, its occupants performed extremely dangerous evasive maneuvers and threw packages into the water to obstruct or damage the official boats. They subsequently opened fire on the patrol vessel, prompting officers to return fire.
The suspected drug boat initially escaped after the Guardia Civil vessel developed a mechanical failure. Authorities then launched a coordinated search for the attackers, their boat and any additional vessels providing support. On August 20, officers located both boats at sea, detained nine people and recovered the large shipment of hashish.
The tenth suspect was later found wounded on the Cádiz coast after allegedly being abandoned by his companions. He was arrested and transferred to a hospital in Puerto Real, while investigators continue determining each suspect’s involvement in the attack. When trafficking networks exchange evasion for gunfire, the struggle for control of Europe’s southern maritime frontier enters a far more dangerous phase.
