Eleven people were safely rescued after a diving catamaran sank in waters southeast of Tabarca Island, off Spain’s Mediterranean coast. The official linked the positive outcome directly to the decision to place the rescue vessel on Tabarca during the busiest months of the year.
The exact cause of the sinking was not immediately disclosed. Maritime authorities are expected to examine the condition of the vessel and the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine whether the incident resulted from mechanical failure, structural damage or another operational problem.
The case also illustrates how quickly a routine diving excursion can turn into a serious emergency. Once a vessel begins taking on water, passengers may be exposed to currents, waves, hypothermia and maritime traffic, making every minute critical.

Tabarca remains one of the most popular coastal destinations in the Alicante region, particularly during the summer season. Its concentration of leisure boats and diving activities increases the need for preventive monitoring, rapid communications and nearby rescue capacity.
Although the sinking caused no deaths or injuries, the incident served as a clear reminder that maritime safety depends on preparation before an emergency occurs. Strategically positioned resources can reduce response times, prevent panic and limit the consequences of unexpected accidents.
