A four-year-old girl has died at Palermo’s Children’s Hospital from a suspected case of diphtheria, a potentially fatal bacterial infection now rarely seen in Italy. Hospital officials said preliminary analyses point toward the disease, although definitive confirmation must come from the Italian National Institute of Health. The child had not received the mandatory vaccination against diphtheria. Her death has prompted both a criminal investigation and renewed concern about the consequences of declining routine immunization.
The girl reportedly developed fever, vomiting and loss of appetite before her condition deteriorated rapidly. She required intubation and was later transferred to pediatric intensive care, where doctors attempted to support her failing vital functions. Medical teams also used extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, an advanced procedure designed to assist the heart and lungs in critical cases. Despite those efforts, the child died after arriving at the hospital in an extremely serious condition.
Palermo prosecutors have ordered an autopsy and seized the child’s medical records to determine the precise cause of death. Investigators will examine why she had not been vaccinated and whether the procedures followed during her medical treatment were appropriate. Reports indicate that her parents declined vaccination because they feared a connection with autism following a diagnosis involving another relative. Extensive scientific evidence has found no causal relationship between vaccines and autism.
A four-year-old cousin who had been in close contact with the girl was also hospitalized with mild symptoms, according to Italian media. He had received the initial vaccination cycle and was reported to be in stable condition under isolation and observation. Diphtheria spreads primarily through respiratory droplets and can release toxins capable of damaging the heart, nervous system and other organs. Vaccination has made the disease exceptionally rare across much of Europe, but the bacterium can still become lethal when it encounters an unprotected person.
The final laboratory findings will determine whether diphtheria caused the death, making caution essential until the investigation is complete. Yet the case already demonstrates how quickly diseases pushed out of public memory can return when immunity is absent. Modern medicine does not eliminate biological threats permanently; it contains them through sustained prevention, surveillance and public trust. When that protective structure weakens, yesterday’s diseases can become today’s emergencies.
