Stolen Picasso Print Recovered Eight Years After Daylight Gallery Theft

An artwork believed lost forever resurfaced beneath years of dust inside an abandoned Milwaukee apartment.

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin | August 2026. A rare signed print by Pablo Picasso has been recovered eight years after it was stolen in broad daylight from DeLind Fine Art Appraisals. The work, titled Torero, is one of approximately 30 known signed examples and was valued at more than $50,000 when it disappeared in 2018. Gallery owner Bill DeLind said he had become convinced that the artwork would never be found.

Local landlord Tim Dertz discovered the framed print while clearing an apartment vacated by an evicted tenant who had abandoned personal belongings. The artwork was hanging in an unusual location and covered by a thick layer of dust, suggesting it had remained there for years. After an antiques dealer recognized it as the missing Picasso, Dertz delivered it to Milwaukee police.

Authorities contacted DeLind and asked him to identify the recovered work. He confirmed that it was the same print stolen from his gallery and described the moment as emotionally overwhelming. The discovery was particularly poignant because his former business partner, who died in February, had contacted police every year on the anniversary of the theft, hoping renewed attention might lead to its recovery.

The artwork remains in police custody while the client who originally consigned it to the gallery resolves ownership and compensation issues with an insurance company. The circumstances of the theft and the print’s unexplained journey into the apartment remain unclear. Its return illustrates how stolen cultural objects can spend years hidden not in sophisticated criminal collections, but within ordinary spaces where their significance goes unnoticed.
