Greek volleyball player Georgia-Loula Angelopoulou suffered a serious knee injury during her national team’s European Championship quarterfinal against Serbia. The incident occurred at the beginning of the second set when the 21-year-old lost her balance following accidental contact with a teammate during a defensive transition.
Angelopoulou’s leg moved unnaturally beneath her as she fell, prompting immediate cries of pain. Medical personnel from both delegations entered the court while several Greek players began crying. The match remained suspended for several minutes as specialists stabilized her knee and prepared her removal from the playing area.
Unable to stand or walk independently, Angelopoulou was carried from the court on a stretcher while spectators applauded. Greece’s national team later published a message expressing support and promising to wait for her return. No definitive diagnosis or recovery timetable had been officially announced, making it inappropriate to speculate about the precise nature of the injury.
The incident represented another serious setback for Greece, which had already been competing with a reduced roster following an injury to Effrosyni Bakodimou.
