Reddit Plans Mandatory Logins as Google AI Search Reduces Website Traffic

The open internet faces a new economic reality.

SAN FRANCISCO, UNITED STATES

Reddit is preparing to restrict access to much of its platform to users who are signed in, marking a significant departure from nearly two decades of largely open browsing. The decision follows a sharp decline in search engine referrals, with the company reporting more than one million fewer visits per week on average during October, as artificial intelligence transforms how people discover information online.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Huffman announced the strategy alongside Reddit’s third-quarter financial results, explaining that the company intends to become a primarily logged-in platform. Initial tests will begin during the fourth quarter of 2026 in selected markets outside the United States, although no timetable has been established for a global rollout.

The change reflects a fundamental shift in Reddit’s relationship with search engines. Historically, the platform benefited from millions of visitors arriving through Google after searching for personal experiences, product recommendations and discussions within specialized communities. Increasingly, however, AI-generated search summaries provide answers directly within search interfaces, reducing the need to visit the original websites.

Huffman identified Google’s AI-powered search features as an important contributor to the decline in referral traffic. The explanation represents Reddit’s assessment of the problem rather than independently established proof that artificial intelligence accounts for every lost visit. Changes in search rankings, user behavior and content discovery may also influence traffic patterns.

The consequences are already visible in Reddit’s audience figures. Global daily active unique users reached 130.3 million during the third quarter, remaining broadly unchanged from the preceding three months despite increasing 12% year over year. In the United States, daily users declined from 53.2 million in the second quarter to 50.7 million, representing a 2% annual decrease.

Reddit warned that, if the recent deterioration in search referrals continues, its global daily audience could decline by a low double-digit percentage during the fourth quarter. That projection is conditional and should not be interpreted as a confirmed future reduction.

The company’s financial performance presents a contrasting picture. Quarterly revenue increased 53% to $895 million, exceeding market expectations, while net income rose 74% to approximately $283 million. Advertising revenue advanced 54% to $847 million, demonstrating that Reddit continues to generate substantial commercial growth despite slower audience expansion.

The divergence between traffic and revenue helps explain the strategic importance of registered users. According to Huffman, signed-in users and app-based activity account for more than 80% of Reddit’s monetization. These audiences typically provide stronger engagement signals and more opportunities for advertisers to reach people through personalized campaigns.

Requiring authentication could therefore strengthen Reddit’s advertising model by improving its understanding of user interests, participation patterns and content preferences. At the same time, mandatory registration introduces friction that may discourage occasional visitors who previously accessed discussions without creating an account.

Huffman has acknowledged this trade-off, describing the transition as a substantial departure from Reddit’s historical commitment to open access. The company is still evaluating how visitors without accounts should interact with its homepage and publicly available content.

The proposed restrictions do not necessarily eliminate anonymous participation. Reddit intends to preserve pseudonymous accounts and is rebuilding its incognito browsing functionality. The distinction is important because requiring an account does not automatically mean demanding a user’s publicly identifiable legal identity.

Another major motivation involves control over Reddit’s data. The platform contains extensive collections of human-generated conversations, opinions and recommendations that have become commercially valuable for training and improving artificial intelligence systems.

Reddit already maintains data-licensing agreements with technology companies, including Google and OpenAI. Restricting unauthenticated access could make unauthorized automated collection more difficult while strengthening the company’s ability to negotiate commercial terms for legitimate access to its content.

However, authentication alone cannot guarantee that automated scraping will disappear. Its effectiveness will depend on technical enforcement, account security, platform monitoring and the methods used by third parties seeking access to data.

The strategy highlights an increasingly important contradiction in the AI economy. Online communities generate information that can improve automated search and conversational systems, yet those same systems may reduce the traffic flowing back to the platforms where the information originated.

For Reddit, the resulting challenge involves preserving the economic value of its discussions while maintaining enough accessibility to attract new users. A more restrictive platform may generate stronger advertising returns from registered participants but could weaken organic discovery if fewer people can encounter its content through conventional search.

The company is also investing in direct engagement features, including a personalized recommendation feed designed to make Reddit a destination users visit regularly rather than merely a website encountered through search results.

The significance of the decision extends beyond social media. Publishers, online communities and digital businesses increasingly depend on the relationship between search visibility, direct audience engagement and the commercial use of their content by AI developers.

Reddit’s planned transition illustrates how that relationship is changing. As artificial intelligence increasingly mediates access to information, platforms are reassessing whether unrestricted visibility delivers sufficient economic value to justify open access.

The outcome of Reddit’s experiments will offer an important test of whether stronger authentication, improved monetization and greater control over data can compensate for reduced search traffic without undermining the accessibility that helped build the platform’s audience.
