Rebeca Torró Takes PSOE Spokesperson Role After Sudden Resignation

Spain’s governing party reshuffles leadership ahead of national elections.

MADRID

Spain’s governing Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) has appointed Rebeca Torró as its new spokesperson following the sudden resignation of Montse Mínguez, whose departure was triggered by controversy surrounding her partner’s property business. The appointment comes as Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez prepares his party for the November 29 general election.

The PSOE’s Federal Executive Commission approved Torró’s appointment during an emergency meeting in Fuenlabrada, near Madrid, before the party’s Federal Committee convened to finalize its electoral preparations.

Torró, who already serves as the party’s organizational secretary, assumes responsibility for public communication at a particularly sensitive moment. Her expanded responsibilities place her at the center of the PSOE’s electoral messaging and its response to political controversies.

Mínguez resigned after reports concerning property holdings associated with her partner generated criticism from opposition parties. The controversy involved a real estate company reportedly owning more than 30 properties and connected to eviction proceedings.

The former spokesperson also withdrew from the PSOE’s congressional candidacy in Lleida and relinquished other party responsibilities. She maintained that her decision was intended to protect the political organization from further controversy.

The revelations intensified scrutiny of the Socialist Party’s housing policies, particularly its commitment to improving affordability and protecting tenants. Opposition representatives questioned the consistency between those policies and the private commercial activities associated with Mínguez’s household.

However, the controversy has not established criminal wrongdoing by the former spokesperson. The distinction between political accountability, personal relationships and legally established misconduct remains important.

The leadership changes extend beyond Torró’s appointment. PSOE president Cristina Narbona will assume responsibility for Studies and Programs, while Javier Alfonso Cendón becomes secretary-general of the Socialist parliamentary group in Congress.

The reorganization redistributes positions previously held by Mínguez and seeks to maintain continuity across the party’s executive and parliamentary structures.

During the same political gathering, the PSOE confirmed Pedro Sánchez as its candidate for prime minister and approved its electoral lists for the upcoming national vote.

The decision demonstrates organizational support for Sánchez within the party leadership, although broader electoral competition remains shaped by disagreements over housing, economic policy and relations among Spain’s political parties.

Torró brings experience from regional government in Valencia and national economic administration. Her previous positions include serving as secretary of state for industry and holding senior responsibilities within the Valencian Socialist organization.

Her appointment also reflects the importance of maintaining an experienced communication structure during an election campaign, particularly when political controversies risk diverting attention from policy proposals.

For the PSOE, the immediate challenge is managing the consequences of Mínguez’s departure while presenting its electoral program and maintaining internal coordination.

The reshuffle illustrates how questions involving political credibility and private commercial relationships can rapidly influence party leadership, even without judicial findings against the individuals concerned.

With the election approaching, Torró’s new role will involve communicating the party’s positions while responding to scrutiny from opponents and the wider public.

Behind Every Decision, a Larger Consequence.
