Problematic Mobile Gaming Linked to Neck, Back and Elbow Pain

A study of medical students suggests that prolonged handheld gaming may carry physical as well as behavioural consequences.

Problematic mobile gaming is associated with higher rates of musculoskeletal discomfort, according to research involving 364 medical students at Jordanian universities. The study examined gaming behaviour using a seven-item addiction scale and recorded pain through a standardised musculoskeletal questionnaire.

Thirty-four participants, approximately 9 percent of the sample, met the researchers’ criteria for mobile gaming addiction. Among that group, 85.3 percent reported neck pain, compared with 65 percent of students who did not meet the criteria. Upper-back discomfort affected 64.7 percent of the problematic-gaming group and 55 percent of the remaining participants.

The largest difference involved elbow pain, reported by 41.2 percent of students classified as addicted and 12.5 percent of their peers. Pain affecting the wrists or hands was also more common among problematic gamers, although the gap was smaller. Those meeting the addiction criteria more frequently said that discomfort interfered with studying, hobbies and other daily activities.

Researchers point to prolonged neck flexion, repetitive finger movements and sustained positions while holding a phone as plausible contributors. They recommend regular movement breaks, improved posture, physical activity and greater awareness of how long gaming sessions affect the body. Persistent or severe pain, however, should receive medical assessment because gaming is only one of many possible causes.

The study was cross-sectional and relied on self-reported information, so it cannot prove that mobile gaming caused the reported pain. Its relatively small sample of Jordanian medical students also limits how confidently the findings can be applied to other populations. The results nevertheless reinforce a broader concern: digital wellbeing involves not only psychological habits and screen time, but also the physical positions maintained while using a device.
