Former Tour de France champion Óscar Pereiro has praised Tadej Pogačar’s reading of the race after the Slovenian launched a decisive attack approximately 50 kilometres from the finish of the Vuelta a España’s fourth stage. Pogačar completed the long solo move in Andorra and finished two minutes and 39 seconds ahead of his closest pursuers, establishing a commanding advantage after only four days of competition.
Pereiro argued that the UAE Team Emirates leader recognized and exploited a specific racing situation rather than simply attacking through overwhelming strength. The 2006 Tour winner described the movement as intelligent and anticipated, adding that Pogačar appeared to manage his effort instead of riding at maximum intensity throughout the entire escape. He particularly noted the Slovenian’s controlled approach on the descents, where he avoided unnecessary risks once his advantage had become secure.
Alberto Contador offered a similar interpretation, suggesting that Pogačar conserved energy after creating the decisive separation. Their assessments are expert opinions based on observing the stage, not conclusions supported by publicly available power data or physiological measurements. Nevertheless, the visible restraint with which Pogačar handled the final kilometres reinforced the impression that he remained in control of both the race and his physical resources.
The victory gave Pogačar a lead of three minutes and 21 seconds over fellow Slovenian Primož Roglič. Enric Mas moved into third place, 11 seconds further behind, and acknowledged that the remaining contenders may effectively be competing for second place unless the leader suffers an accident, illness or major tactical reversal. Such declarations demonstrate the psychological consequences of Pogačar’s attack as clearly as the time differences themselves.
Pereiro’s analysis highlights a central quality of elite stage-race cycling: power creates opportunities, but judgment determines when to use it. By attacking far from the finish and then regulating his effort, Pogačar gained enough time to reshape the general classification without exhausting himself unnecessarily. The Vuelta remains far from concluded, yet its rivals must now find ways to destabilize a leader who has already converted one moment of tactical clarity into a formidable advantage.
