New Pemex Oil Spill Triggers Emergency Response off Campeche

Satellite monitoring suggests the slick is unlikely to reach the coast immediately.

CIUDAD DEL CARMEN, MEXICO

Mexican authorities have launched an offshore emergency operation after a new oil leak was detected at a Pemex facility in the Gulf of Mexico. The incident occurred approximately 46 nautical miles north of Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, only months after a major spill originating in the Abkatún-Pol-Chuc complex contaminated extensive stretches of Mexico’s coastline.

The Permanent Observatory of the Gulf of Mexico received the initial report on September 10 and activated continuous monitoring and spill-drift forecasting. Pemex personnel subsequently traced the leak to a subsea pipeline and began containment work. Authorities have not yet disclosed the volume of hydrocarbons released, the pipeline’s identity or the cause of the failure.

Mexico’s Navy activated its Local Contingency Plan at 6:45 a.m., deploying the offshore patrol vessel ARM Guanajuato, four additional boats, two aircraft and 255 naval personnel. The operation is supporting Pemex’s efforts to contain the spill at sea. The Agency for Safety, Energy and Environment is also expected to conduct an aerial inspection documenting containment, cleanup and repair activities.

Four satellite assessments using synthetic-aperture radar and multispectral imagery have tracked the slick’s development. Three drift models forecast that it will move westward during the next five days and indicate a low probability of it reaching the coast or environmentally sensitive areas during that period. The outlook could change within ten days, however, if an approaching cold front alters winds and marine currents.

The incident tests safeguards introduced after the February spill from a 36-inch Pemex pipeline. That earlier emergency affected approximately 630 kilometres of coastline across Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Tabasco and generated more than 915 tonnes of contaminated waste. An internal investigation found that the principal valve was not fully closed until eight days after the damage was detected and that operational personnel had initially understated the leak. Three Pemex officials were dismissed, while complaints were submitted to federal prosecutors and Mexico’s anticorruption authorities.

The new Observatory brings together scientific institutions, environmental agencies, the Navy and Pemex, combining satellites, oceanographic buoys and forecasting models. Its early response demonstrates improved detection capacity, but repeated leaks continue to raise questions about ageing offshore infrastructure, preventive maintenance and corporate transparency. Containment may stop oil from reaching land; it does not remove the need to establish why another pipeline failed.

Environmental responsibility begins before the emergency.
