Netflix Confirms Two Seasons of Twilight Animated Series Midnight Sun

A familiar romance returns through a different perspective.

LOS ANGELES

Netflix has committed to producing two seasons of Midnight Sun, an animated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s bestselling novel that revisits the Twilight universe through the perspective of vampire Edward Cullen. The announcement signals a substantial investment in the franchise, nearly two decades after its cinematic debut transformed the supernatural romance into an international entertainment phenomenon.

The confirmation came during Lionsgate’s quarterly earnings presentation on November 5, when Kevin Beggs, chairman of Lionsgate Television Group, revealed that the streaming platform had commissioned two seasons of adult animation. The agreement represents an upfront production commitment rather than a renewal following an initial season’s performance.

Originally announced in September 2024, the project adapts Meyer’s 2020 novel, which retells the events of the first Twilight book from Edward’s perspective instead of Bella Swan’s. This narrative shift introduces readers to his private thoughts, supernatural instincts and internal conflict as he develops an increasingly complicated relationship with the human teenager.

The production also reflects Meyer’s continued involvement in the fictional universe she created. According to Beggs, the author and her creative team are closely participating in development alongside Netflix and Lionsgate, providing direct oversight of the adaptation.

Sinead Daly, whose television credits include Tell Me Lies and The Get Down, will serve as showrunner, while Lynn Wang has been identified as supervising director. Meyer is among the executive producers, alongside Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Erik Feig and Meghan Hibbett.

The decision to use animation introduces creative possibilities that distinguish the project from the original films starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart. Supernatural abilities, heightened perceptions and psychological experiences could be represented without the visual limitations associated with live-action production.

However, the animation style, episode count and narrative distribution across the two seasons have not been publicly confirmed. It also remains unclear whether the second season will complete the adaptation of Midnight Sun or explore additional material.

The original five-film franchise generated more than $3.3 billion worldwide, establishing Twilight as a valuable entertainment property with an enduring international audience.

For Lionsgate, the animated series offers an opportunity to reactivate that audience while introducing the story to viewers who may be unfamiliar with the earlier films. The company has also acknowledged continuing discussions with Meyer about potential future cinematic projects, although no additional production agreements have been announced.

The casting process remains another unresolved element. No official voice actors have been identified for Edward Cullen or Bella Swan, and neither Netflix nor Lionsgate has established a premiere date.

Previous production reporting suggested that development could extend into 2027, but those estimates should not be interpreted as a confirmed release schedule.

The two-season commitment nevertheless provides the creative team with a broader production framework before audiences have seen the first installment. Its significance lies not only in reviving a commercially successful franchise, but also in testing whether animation and an alternative narrative perspective can offer a distinct experience within a familiar fictional world.

For Twilight, the next chapter will not begin with an entirely new story, but with the possibility of discovering how differently the same events can be understood.

The Story Continues Beyond the Headlines.
