Microsoft Reportedly Pitches Its Largest Gaming Franchises to Hollywood

Xbox’s most valuable worlds could become the foundation of a broader film and television business.

REDMOND, UNITED STATES

Microsoft is reportedly offering Hollywood studios and streaming platforms access to more than a dozen video-game franchises for potential film and television adaptations. The reported portfolio includes Halo, The Elder Scrolls, Diablo and Warcraft, although the company has not publicly confirmed the complete list or announced completed agreements for these properties.

Industry reports indicate that Netflix, Paramount and Universal are among the companies evaluating Microsoft’s proposal. The technology group is allegedly seeking a long-term arrangement valued at more than $300 million, but the structure of any transaction remains unclear. It could involve licensing fees, production financing, distribution rights or a combination of those elements.

Microsoft already possesses considerable experience across entertainment media. Amazon’s Fallout series demonstrated that a faithful adaptation can reach audiences far beyond existing players, while the Minecraft film became a major commercial success. Paramount’s live-action Halo series produced two seasons but was cancelled after receiving a mixed response, showing that a recognisable franchise alone cannot guarantee lasting audience engagement.

Several Microsoft-owned properties are already connected to confirmed or developing projects. Paramount has an agreement to produce a live-action Call of Duty film, while Netflix has been developing adaptations based on Gears of War. The new initiative would expand that approach by treating Microsoft’s collection of intellectual property as a coordinated entertainment portfolio rather than negotiating occasional projects independently.

The strategy reflects the changing economics of both gaming and Hollywood. Studios increasingly value franchises with established characters, mythology and global fan communities, while game publishers can use adaptations to increase sales, subscriptions and merchandise revenue. Microsoft gained an exceptional catalogue through its acquisitions of Bethesda parent ZeniMax Media and Activision Blizzard.

Any deal will depend on how much creative control Microsoft retains. Fallout succeeded partly because its television story respected the games’ universe without simply reproducing an existing plot. Halo demonstrated the risks of alienating established fans through disputed creative decisions. Microsoft can open its catalogue to Hollywood, but protecting the identity of each franchise will determine whether expansion strengthens those properties or merely exploits their names.
