Microsoft is introducing a cell-preview capability for Copilot in Excel designed to reduce unintended modifications to workbooks. Before executing certain actions, the assistant can now identify the cells it plans to change and present the proposed operation for review, giving users an opportunity to approve or reject it.
The feature is especially relevant when Copilot prepares broader actions involving multiple rows, formulas or data ranges. Instead of relying only on a written description, users can inspect the areas affected by the instruction before selecting the option to apply it. If the preview does not correspond with their intention, they can revise the prompt or cancel the operation.
Copilot in Excel can generate formulas, reorganise worksheets, modify values, create charts and PivotTables, apply formatting and analyse trends through natural-language requests. This breadth makes the tool useful, but it also increases the consequences of an ambiguous prompt. A misunderstood instruction could alter dependencies across a complex workbook or replace information the user intended to preserve.
Microsoft has also expanded its controls through separate edit, plan and chat modes. Plan mode outlines the worksheets, ranges, formulas and assumptions involved before work begins, while chat mode provides analysis without directly modifying the file. Completed Copilot edits can be traced through Excel’s change history, and previous workbook versions remain available when files are stored with versioning enabled.
The preview does not guarantee that Copilot’s suggestions are correct. Users must still verify formulas, calculations and source data, particularly in financial, scientific or regulated workbooks. Its importance lies in shifting more control toward the person operating the spreadsheet, making AI-assisted editing easier to inspect before a potentially consequential change becomes part of the document.
