Michael Douglas Reveals Secret Romance With Kathleen Turner After 40 Years

Hollywood chemistry was real, but protecting a family kept the relationship hidden for decades.

Michael Douglas has revealed that he and Kathleen Turner had a secret romantic relationship while filming Romancing the Stone in 1984, ending four decades of public denials about what happened between the two actors. The disclosure appears in Douglas’s new memoir, One Helluva Ride, scheduled for publication on October 6.

Douglas says the attraction was immediate when he met Turner to discuss the role of Joan Wilder. At the time, he was separated from his wife, Diandra Douglas, although the marriage had not formally ended. He now describes the relationship with Turner as something that developed gradually through the intensity of production, mutual respect and a strong physical attraction.

The romance unfolded largely in secret during filming in Mexico. Douglas says even director Robert Zemeckis and co star Danny DeVito were unaware of what was happening. After long days on set, he would quietly visit Turner’s hotel room once the rest of the production had settled for the night.

The situation changed when Diandra arrived in Mexico with their son Cameron. According to Douglas, she sensed what was happening and confronted Turner privately. Turner then decided to end the relationship rather than interfere further in the marriage.

Douglas subsequently reconciled with Diandra, mainly because of concern for their son, but now says that decision was a mistake. Their marriage never fully recovered and eventually ended in divorce in 2000. The settlement reportedly included a payment of $45 million to Diandra.

For decades, both Douglas and Turner publicly maintained that their relationship had involved intense chemistry and flirtation, but nothing more. Douglas now says that version was deliberately false. He explains that the denial was intended to protect his wife and child and remained the official story even during later collaborations.

Their professional relationship survived. After Romancing the Stone, they worked together again in The Jewel of the Nile, The War of the Roses and, decades later, The Kominsky Method. Douglas says he asked Turner for permission before including the story in his memoir and describes their friendship as intact.

The revelation changes the history surrounding one of Hollywood’s most famous on screen partnerships. What audiences interpreted as unusually convincing chemistry was not entirely performance.

The visible and the hidden, in context.
