The operation removes a senior figure, but the criminal economy sustaining regional violence remains intact.
MICHOACÁN, MEXICO
Mexican soldiers killed Luis Enrique Barragán Chávez, known as “El Güicho” or “R5,” during an intelligence-led operation at the Rodeo del Pinal ranch in Tocumbo, western Michoacán. The Defence Ministry said military personnel came under gunfire and returned fire, killing Barragán and one accompanying suspect.
Authorities seized two automatic rifles, ammunition, magazines and an all-terrain vehicle. No military casualties were reported. The operation involved the Mexican Army and National Guard, with coordination from federal prosecutors and Michoacán security authorities.
The Mexican government identified Barragán as the leader of the Los Reyes Cartel and the principal coordinator of extortion against avocado producers in the region. He reportedly assumed control after the arrest of Alfonso Fernández Magallón, known as “Poncho” or “La Quiringua.” Officials also alleged that Barragán maintained connections with Juan José Farías Álvarez, “El Abuelo,” leader of the Tepalcatepec Cartel.
Barragán faced a provisional Mexican arrest warrant for extradition to the United States. American authorities had offered a reward of up to $3 million for information leading to his capture and described him as the Los Reyes Cartel’s principal enforcer. He had been charged in the United States with drug-trafficking and firearms offences, allegations that had not reached trial before his death.
US investigators accused Barragán’s organization of trafficking methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl, then using the proceeds to acquire weapons, recruit local gunmen and hire Colombian mercenaries. The network allegedly participated in the Cárteles Unidos alliance, formed by smaller Michoacán groups to resist the territorial expansion of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
His death represents an immediate leadership loss for the Los Reyes structure, but it does not automatically dismantle its extortion networks. Michoacán’s avocado and berry industries remain vulnerable because criminal groups can extract revenue from producers, packers and transportation routes without controlling the entire drug market. The next test for authorities will be preventing a violent succession struggle while protecting agricultural communities from whichever faction attempts to occupy the vacuum.
