Max Verstappen delivered an extraordinary karting performance at Silverstone, overtaking 100 competitors in just 14 laps during a special exhibition organized by Red Bull. The four-time Formula 1 world champion started from the 101st and final position in the event known as Max vs 100, facing a field of amateur drivers, content creators, journalists and athletes. His challenge was to pass every opponent within a maximum of 30 laps, but he completed the task in approximately 35 minutes. The event took place on September 16, demonstrating how a professional racing driver could navigate an unusually crowded field under a specially designed competition format.
The opening lap immediately transformed the challenge. Verstappen passed 64 competitors before completing his first circuit, moving from last place to 37th despite the congestion and incidents associated with such an extensive starting grid. By the fifth lap, he had already overtaken 84 participants, leaving only a small group between him and the lead. His rapid progress reduced what had been designed as an extended endurance-style challenge to a relatively short pursuit.
The event took place on a specially adapted circuit combining Silverstone’s karting facilities with sections of the Grand Prix venue. Participants competed in karts with standardized performance characteristics, while the regulations included weight adjustments intended to reduce equipment-related advantages. The unusual format also stipulated that drivers overtaken by Verstappen were eliminated from the challenge. These conditions distinguished the exhibition from conventional karting competition, making the objective a continuous series of overtaking maneuvers rather than a traditional race against equally experienced professional drivers.
As the field narrowed, Verstappen encountered increasing resistance from the remaining competitors. The final overtakes came on lap 14, bringing the challenge to an end well before the scheduled distance. Speaking after the event, the Dutch driver acknowledged the chaotic nature of the race and described returning to karting as an enjoyable experience. He also joked that the result represented his first victory of the year, treating the promotional competition with the enthusiasm associated with his professional racing career.
Karting occupies a central place in Verstappen’s development as a racing driver. Long before reaching Formula 1, he competed extensively in the discipline, developing the vehicle control, spatial awareness and overtaking techniques required in close competition. His performance at Silverstone offered a visible illustration of those skills, although the difference in experience between a world champion and an amateur field is essential context. The exhibition was designed to entertain rather than provide a direct comparison between competitors of equivalent ability.
For Red Bull, the event also demonstrated how motorsport can connect professional competition with digital entertainment and audience participation. By placing a Formula 1 champion among 100 challengers, the organizers created a format built around uncertainty, accessibility and spectacle.
Verstappen needed fewer than half the allotted laps to complete his mission. The result reinforced the enduring connection between elite motorsport and the discipline where many of its drivers first developed their skills.
