Barcelona witnessed emerging talent and historic speed.
BARCELONA, SPAIN — July 2026. Spanish middle-distance runner Marta Mitjans confirmed her exceptional form by winning the women’s 800 meters at the Míting Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona. The 19-year-old controlled the race before accelerating decisively in the final straight and crossing the line in 2:00.63. Júlia Lillo finished second with a personal best of 2:00.92, followed by Lara Alexia Tortell and Rocío Garrido.
Mitjans arrived in Barcelona only days after recording 1:59.28 in Ordizia, the fastest Spanish performance of the season. Although the race was prepared to challenge Esther Guerrero’s Catalan record, the young athlete prioritized positioning and victory over an aggressive attack on the clock. The result strengthened her status as one of Spain’s most promising middle-distance runners ahead of the European Championships in Birmingham.
The evening’s most significant record came in the women’s 400-meter hurdles, where Britain’s Emily Newnham produced a commanding performance. She won in 54.20 seconds, lowering the meeting record by 37 hundredths and erasing a mark that had stood for 26 years. Portugal’s Sofia Lavreshina finished second, while Spain’s Sara Gallego placed third with a season-best 55.51.
Gallego’s performance also secured the Spanish federation’s qualifying standard for Birmingham. María Vicente continued her return from the Achilles tendon injury suffered in 2024, competing in the 100-meter hurdles and high jump. In the men’s 400-meter hurdles, Spanish record-holder Jesús David Delgado claimed victory in 48.87 seconds.
Nearly 300 athletes competed across 16 events at Barcelona’s Joan Serrahima Stadium despite intense summer heat. Mitjans delivered the home victory the crowd expected, while Newnham produced the historic mark that defined the meeting. Their performances combined youth, international quality and record-breaking speed.
