Macklemore has announced a European charity tour centered on support for Palestinians after being removed from Ed Sheeran’s U.S. stadium tour following pro-Palestinian remarks on stage. The American rapper, whose real name is Benjamin Haggerty, will perform in Dublin, Paris and London next month, with North American dates expected later. Proceeds from the shows are intended for humanitarian and advocacy organizations supporting Palestinians. The move transforms a dispute over speech and performance into a new touring platform built explicitly around a political cause.
The controversy began after Macklemore voiced support for Palestine during a U.S. concert. He later said he had been removed from Sheeran’s tour after Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium and the New England Patriots, objected to his appearance. Kraft said the venue would not provide a platform for what he characterized as hate speech. Sheeran maintained that he had not personally made the decision to remove Macklemore from the lineup.
The fallout quickly expanded beyond the original dispute. Several supporting acts withdrew from Sheeran’s tour in solidarity with Macklemore, while Sheeran later addressed the situation from the stage and described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as catastrophic and unjustifiable. Macklemore, meanwhile, announced that he would donate the full $1 million in net earnings associated with the tour to organizations supporting Palestinians. Kraft and Sheeran subsequently said they would each donate $2 million toward humanitarian aid in the region.
The new tour deepens Macklemore’s decision to use his public platform for advocacy. He has argued that audiences increasingly expect artists to engage with major political and humanitarian issues rather than remain publicly neutral. The performances are also expected to include other artists who have previously expressed solidarity with Palestinians, extending the tour beyond a conventional concert format.
That strategy carries both cultural and commercial consequences. Musicians with global audiences increasingly operate in an environment where silence, speech and sponsorship relationships can all become politically significant. The Macklemore episode illustrates how quickly artistic platforms can intersect with venue ownership, corporate interests, humanitarian advocacy and expectations surrounding public figures.
What began as a dispute over one statement on stage has therefore evolved into something larger. Macklemore is now testing whether controversy can be converted into an independent cultural platform with a clearly defined political and humanitarian purpose.
