Kaia Gerber Honors Late Brother Presley in Heartbreaking Public Tribute

The model shares childhood memories following her brother’s death at 27.

LOS ANGELES

Kaia Gerber has publicly mourned the death of her older brother, Presley Gerber, sharing childhood memories and an intimate message about the difficulty of living without someone who shaped her earliest experiences. Her tribute, published on Instagram on October 18, came nearly a month after the 27-year-old model died in Santa Monica, California.

The 25-year-old actress and model accompanied her words with a childhood video and a photograph of the siblings together. Rather than focusing on Presley’s public image, she remembered their relationship through moments of affection, familiarity and the sense of protection she associated with her older brother.

In one of the message’s most personal passages, Kaia wrote, “I was born loving you. I will die loving you.” The declaration became the emotional center of a tribute that acknowledged how difficult she found it to describe her grief.

She also reflected on the experience of being Presley’s younger sister, describing that relationship as a defining part of her identity. Her words suggested that the loss involved more than the absence of a family member. It had also changed something fundamental about how she understood her own life.

Presley died on September 20 at a rehabilitation facility in Santa Monica. The Los Angeles County medical examiner confirmed his death, while the circumstances remained under investigation.

Early reports raised the possibility of an overdose, but an official final cause of death had not been established in the information available at publication. That distinction is important when reporting on a death involving an ongoing medical investigation.

Presley was the son of supermodel Cindy Crawford and businessman Rande Gerber. Like his sister, he pursued a career in fashion, working with internationally recognized brands and appearing in campaigns that brought him public attention from a young age.

His professional career included modeling assignments for Moschino and Calvin Klein, as well as an appearance alongside his mother in a Pepsi advertisement aired during the 2018 Super Bowl.

Beyond fashion, Presley had spoken publicly about difficulties involving mental health and substance use. He also used social media to encourage conversations about emotional well-being, including through an initiative known as Mental Health Mondays.

Those experiences formed part of his public history, but they do not justify reducing his identity or his family’s loss to the circumstances surrounding his death.

Crawford also shared a message commemorating her son, accompanied by a black-and-white photograph. Speaking on behalf of the family, she remembered his kindness, sensitivity and willingness to show vulnerability.

Rande Gerber shared the family statement as well, while the relatives expressed appreciation for messages of sympathy and support received from friends and members of the public.

The tributes have drawn attention partly because both siblings grew up within one of America’s most recognizable fashion families. Yet Kaia’s message offered little interest in celebrity status. Its focus remained on the personal relationship between a brother and sister whose lives had been closely connected since childhood.

Her reflections also touched on an experience familiar to many grieving families: the difficulty of finding language adequate to describe a profound loss. Public statements may offer a means of remembrance, but they cannot fully communicate an individual’s private experience.

There is no single psychological timetable for bereavement, and the decision to speak publicly should not be interpreted as evidence of a particular stage of recovery.

For the Gerber family, the public tributes preserve memories of Presley while leaving much of their mourning outside public view.

Kaia’s message ultimately stood apart from the ordinary language of celebrity announcements. Through childhood images and direct expressions of love, she remembered not a public personality, but the brother whose presence had accompanied her throughout her life.

Behind Every Story, Human Complexity Matters.
