Joselu Chooses Al-Sailiya for His Next Chapter in Qatar

The former Real Madrid hero stays in the Gulf.

Doha, Qatar

Joselu Mato has reached an agreement to join Al-Sailiya as a free agent, extending his career in Qatar after leaving Al-Gharafa. The 36-year-old Spanish striker had attracted interest from clubs in Spain, Italy and Germany, but ultimately decided to remain in the Middle East. His arrival gives Al-Sailiya an experienced forward with a long European résumé and a reputation for delivering decisive goals. The move is expected to become official once the remaining formalities are completed.

Joselu had been without a club since ending his spell with Al-Gharafa, where he spent two seasons after leaving Real Madrid in 2024. During his time in Qatar, he maintained a strong scoring record and adapted quickly to a different competitive environment. That experience reduces the transition risk for Al-Sailiya, which is adding a veteran capable of providing both goals and leadership. For Joselu, the move offers continuity rather than another major geographical or tactical adjustment.

His name remains closely associated with one of Real Madrid’s most memorable recent Champions League nights. In the 2023-2024 semifinal second leg against Bayern Munich, Joselu scored two late goals that sent Madrid into the final. He finished that season with 19 goals in 51 appearances across competitions and won the Champions League, LaLiga and the Spanish Super Cup. Those performances transformed what had initially appeared to be a supporting role into one of the most celebrated chapters of his career.

Several European clubs had explored the possibility of bringing him back, including teams from Spain as well as Eintracht Frankfurt and Union Berlin in Germany. None of those approaches ultimately produced an agreement. Al-Sailiya instead secured a striker who already understands Qatari football and arrives with extensive experience across Spain, England and Germany. His profile could be particularly valuable for a squad seeking greater efficiency in attack.

The transfer also illustrates the growing ability of Gulf clubs to retain experienced European players beyond their initial contracts in the region. Joselu could have pursued a final return to European football, but continuity in Qatar has emerged as the preferred option. His next challenge will be proving that the instincts that made him decisive in Madrid and productive with Al-Gharafa remain intact. For Al-Sailiya, the calculation is straightforward: experience, positioning and goals can still carry significant competitive value.
