The Danish champion will prioritize a complete recovery after a Tour de France crash fractured his collarbone.
COPENHAGEN, DENMARK | 18 AUGUST 2026
Jonas Vingegaard will not return to competition during the remainder of the 2026 cycling season. Visma–Lease a Bike confirmed that the two-time Tour de France winner continues to experience the effects of a fractured collarbone. The injury occurred during a crash on Stage 15 of the Tour on 19 July.
Vingegaard underwent surgery after the accident but has been unable to resume training at the intensity required for elite competition. The 29-year-old explained that the delayed recovery makes it impossible to regain his highest level before the end of the year. His team will now develop a structured programme focused on his rehabilitation and preparation for 2027.
The decision rules Vingegaard out of the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, scheduled from 20 to 27 September. It also ends speculation about a possible return at Il Lombardia in October. Both events had been considered potential late-season objectives following his premature departure from the Tour de France.
Despite the injury, Vingegaard concludes 2026 with victories at Paris–Nice, the Volta a Catalunya and the Giro d’Italia. His Giro triumph strengthened an already distinguished Grand Tour record that includes two Tour de France titles and the 2025 Vuelta a España. Protecting his long-term physical condition now takes priority over accelerating a return that could compromise the next stage of his career.
