John Ternus Takes Apple’s Helm as Tim Cook Moves to Executive Chair

The succession is confirmed, but reports of a complete executive reorganisation extend beyond what Apple has officially announced.

John Ternus will become Apple’s chief executive officer on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook after 15 years of leadership. Apple’s board unanimously approved the transition following a long-term succession process. Ternus will also join the board, while Cook becomes executive chairman rather than leaving the company entirely.

Cook will remain involved in selected responsibilities, including engagement with governments and policymakers. Arthur Levinson, Apple’s non-executive chairman for the previous 15 years, will become lead independent director. The arrangement gives Ternus operational authority while preserving access to Cook’s institutional experience and international relationships.

Ternus joined Apple’s product-design organisation in 2001 and became senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021. He has overseen engineering across the iPhone, Mac, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods and Vision Pro. His work also included the Mac’s transition to Apple-designed processors, giving him extensive experience coordinating hardware, software and supply-chain decisions.

Reports suggest the new chief executive may gradually reorganise services, marketing, retail, human resources and hardware leadership as veteran executives approach retirement. Eddy Cue, Deirdre O’Brien, Greg Joswiak and Johny Srouji have been identified as figures whose responsibilities could eventually change. Apple, however, has not announced their departures or confirmed the proposed division of Cue’s services portfolio. Those scenarios remain informed reporting rather than completed corporate decisions.

The leadership transition is part of a broader renewal already underway. Sabih Khan serves as chief operating officer, Kevan Parekh as chief financial officer and Jennifer Newstead as general counsel. Describing every recent executive change as an immediate consequence of Ternus’s arrival would therefore oversimplify a succession process developing across several years.

Ternus inherits a company valued at approximately $4 trillion but facing pressure to demonstrate stronger artificial-intelligence capabilities, maintain hardware differentiation and navigate global regulation and supply-chain tensions. Rumoured products such as a foldable iPhone may influence expectations, but they remain unconfirmed. His central challenge will be preserving Apple’s integration and operational discipline while proving that an engineer identified with hardware can define the company’s next strategic era.
