Intelligent machines demand a new cybersecurity architecture.

Italian cybersecurity startup Exein has reached a valuation of $1.7 billion after securing $270 million in fresh investment, becoming a unicorn as demand grows for technologies capable of protecting intelligent machines. The funding round, announced on September 15 and led by global investment firm Headline with participation from the European Investment Bank, places the Rome-based company among Europe’s most valuable private cybersecurity businesses. Its valuation has increased thirtyfold in two years, reflecting investor interest in securing systems that interact directly with the physical world. The development highlights a significant shift in cybersecurity priorities as artificial intelligence moves beyond software applications into industrial equipment, vehicles and autonomous devices.
Founded in 2018 by Gianni Cuozzo, Exein develops embedded security technologies designed to protect connected hardware at the device level. Its approach differs from conventional solutions that primarily monitor networks or analyze threats from external infrastructure. Instead, protection is integrated into the operating environment of the equipment itself, enabling threats to be detected and blocked closer to their point of execution. This architecture is particularly relevant for devices that must operate independently or cannot tolerate delays in responding to malicious activity.
Physical AI introduces a distinct category of security challenges. Industrial robots, autonomous vehicles, drones, medical equipment and energy infrastructure increasingly rely on software capable of interpreting information and initiating actions in real environments. A compromised system could therefore produce consequences extending beyond stolen data, potentially affecting machinery, infrastructure or human safety. These risks make cybersecurity an operational safety concern rather than exclusively an information technology function.
Exein has developed two principal products, Pulsar and Photon. Pulsar provides real-time protection for Linux-based devices using eBPF technology and the Rust programming language to support efficient monitoring with limited computational overhead. Photon builds on this infrastructure to identify and block malicious execution paths within the operating system kernel. The company describes its architecture as an autonomous defensive layer that allows individual devices to respond to threats without depending entirely on network-level protection.
According to Exein, its technology protects more than 1.5 billion connected devices worldwide. The company operates offices in Italy, Germany, the United States and Taiwan, with a workforce of approximately 40 employees. Its new financing will support international expansion, particularly in the United States and Asia-Pacific, which together account for half of its revenue. The investment will also strengthen research and recruitment as the company develops additional security capabilities.
European regulation provides another dimension to its expansion. The European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act establishes cybersecurity requirements for products containing digital elements, increasing the importance of integrating protection during product development. Manufacturers face growing incentives to incorporate security into hardware and software architectures rather than treating it as an additional feature after deployment. This regulatory environment creates opportunities for specialized suppliers while raising compliance expectations across industrial supply chains.
The company’s valuation reflects investor expectations rather than a guarantee of future commercial performance. Competition remains substantial, with established cybersecurity providers and emerging embedded-security specialists pursuing overlapping markets. Exein must demonstrate that its technology can scale across different hardware environments while maintaining reliability, affordability and protection against evolving threats.
The broader significance lies in the convergence of artificial intelligence, industrial engineering and cybersecurity. As machines acquire greater operational autonomy, protecting their decision-making infrastructure becomes inseparable from protecting the environments in which they operate. Exein’s expansion illustrates how cybersecurity is evolving from defending digital information toward safeguarding the relationship between intelligent systems and the physical world.
