Israel Bars UK Green Leader After Party Labels Zionism a Form of Racism

The dispute exposes a widening political divide over Zionism, antisemitism and Palestinian rights in Britain.

Israel has barred Zack Polanski, leader of the United Kingdom’s Green Party, from entering the country after party members approved a motion defining Zionism as a form of racism. The decision was announced by Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar shortly after the vote at the Greens’ annual conference.

The motion was approved by 1,022 votes to 813 and commits the party to treating Zionism as it would other forms of racism. It also supports the creation of a single democratic Palestinian state across historic Palestine, a position that differs from the two state framework traditionally supported by many European governments.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry described the resolution as antisemitic and said Polanski’s entry ban was a first step. President Isaac Herzog also condemned the motion, arguing that Zionism represents the national liberation movement of the Jewish people and the basis for Jewish self determination. Supporters of the Green motion dispute that interpretation and frame their position in terms of Palestinian rights and opposition to Israeli state policies.

The vote has also generated criticism from British Jewish organizations. The Board of Deputies of British Jews, the Community Security Trust and the Jewish Leadership Council warned that the motion could intensify hostility toward Jewish communities. The debate comes amid continued concern over reported antisemitic incidents in the United Kingdom.

The Green Party itself is not unified on the issue. At least three of its five members of Parliament opposed the motion, while Polanski did not participate in the vote. In a joint statement, Green representatives said they saw no contradiction between defending Palestinian rights and defending the rights and security of Jewish people.

The controversy reflects a broader political conflict over the meaning of Zionism. Supporters generally understand it as the movement for Jewish national self determination, while critics may use the term to challenge political structures, territorial claims or policies associated with the Israeli state.

Israel’s decision transforms that ideological dispute into a diplomatic consequence. A resolution adopted within a British political party has now directly affected the international mobility of its leader, illustrating how domestic political language can rapidly become a matter of foreign policy.

Analysis that transcends power.
