An unusual squad solution emerged from an extraordinary international window.
Debrecen
The Republic of Ireland has registered Queens Park Rangers defender Jimmy Dunne as its third goalkeeper for the UEFA Nations League match against Israel after Gavin Bazunu withdrew from the squad. UEFA regulations require teams to include three goalkeepers in their matchday selection, leaving Ireland needing an immediate solution alongside Caoimhín Kelleher and Max O’Leary. Dunne, normally a centre back, was redesignated to satisfy that requirement.
The situation developed after prolonged discussions within the Irish camp about whether the upcoming fixtures against Israel should be played. The squad ultimately chose to continue with the matches, but Bazunu informed manager Heimir Hallgrímsson that he would not participate. The goalkeeper explained that his decision reflected personal convictions concerning the loss of civilian life in the conflict and stressed that his position was not directed against Israeli or Jewish people.
Bazunu’s departure created an immediate administrative problem. Ireland had traveled with three recognized goalkeepers, and once one left the squad, UEFA’s requirement still had to be met. Rather than attempting a last minute call up, the coaching staff placed Dunne among the registered goalkeepers. The 28 year old therefore appears on the official list in a position completely different from the one he normally occupies for club and country.
Ireland still retains two specialist options in goal, meaning Dunne is primarily an emergency solution rather than a realistic first choice. The unusual registration nevertheless illustrates how regulatory requirements can produce unexpected tactical and administrative decisions when a squad changes shortly before kickoff.
The episode has also intensified attention around a Nations League fixture already carrying exceptional scrutiny. Ireland’s players have chosen to proceed with the match while maintaining a public position of concern over the humanitarian consequences of the conflict. That context has turned what would normally be a routine squad adjustment into a broader story involving sport, regulation and personal conscience.
For Dunne, the designation is unlikely to change his real role on the field. But on the official team sheet, a centre back has become a goalkeeper because international football occasionally produces situations no tactical manual could anticipate.
