Apple’s new Handoff system may make changing devices nearly as simple as picking one up.

Apple is preparing an iOS 27 feature called iPhone Handoff that will allow users to move a cellular line between two iPhones while retaining the same telephone number and service plan. The function appeared in an iOS 27 beta after receiving only a brief mention during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
Users will designate one device as the primary iPhone, where the main eSIM and cellular settings remain. A second handset will receive a companion eSIM associated with the same line. This arrangement should eliminate the need to transfer an eSIM manually whenever someone changes between a principal device and a secondary or backup phone.
The system differs from Apple’s existing Continuity functions. Those features can relay calls and messages to nearby products through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, often requiring the principal iPhone to remain connected. iPhone Handoff is expected to work through the mobile network, potentially allowing the companion device to maintain cellular service even when the primary phone is unavailable.
Location sharing will reportedly follow whichever iPhone is actively using the number, while plan administration will remain centralised on the main device. Both phones are expected to require iOS 27, the same Apple Account and compatible eSIM technology. Initial activation may also require the devices to be physically close for identity and security verification.
The service will depend on mobile-network support and may not be available in every country when iOS 27 launches. T-Mobile in the United States and Deutsche Telekom in Germany have been identified as possible initial participants, but Apple and the carriers have not confirmed a complete rollout list, pricing structure or all compatible iPhone models. The feature therefore promises greater flexibility, but its practical reach will ultimately be determined by telecommunications providers.
