Selecting the correct input, restarting the equipment and testing the cable can resolve most connection failures without technical assistance.
Mexico City, August 14, 2026.— HDMI is the standard connection used to transmit digital video and audio through a single cable. It connects Smart TVs to game consoles, computers, streaming devices, Blu-ray players, decoders and home-theater equipment.
When a television does not recognize a connected device, the first step is to confirm that both ends of the cable are firmly inserted. The equipment should preferably be turned off before disconnecting and reconnecting the cable to avoid damaging the ports.
The user must then select the correct source with the television’s remote control. If the cable is plugged into HDMI 2, for example, the input menu must also be set to HDMI 2 rather than television, antenna or another port.
Restarting both devices can restore the digital handshake used to establish the connection. Turn off the television and the external device, disconnect them from power for approximately one minute and reconnect them before switching them on again.
If the message remains, test a different HDMI port and another cable. Connecting the same external device to a second television—or attaching another device to the original TV—can help determine whether the problem originates in the cable, the screen or the signal source.
Computers and consoles may also be transmitting an unsupported resolution or refresh rate. Temporarily lowering the output to 1080p at 60 Hz can restore the image, after which compatible 4K, HDR or higher-refresh settings may be activated gradually.
Modern consoles capable of 4K at 120 Hz, variable refresh rates or advanced HDR require suitable ports and certified high-bandwidth cables. A cable may display a basic image correctly while failing when asked to carry more demanding video and audio signals.
For soundbars and receivers, the HDMI cable must be connected to the ports labeled ARC or eARC on both devices. The television’s audio settings and HDMI-CEC control—identified by different commercial names depending on the manufacturer—may also need to be enabled.
If none of these measures work, updating the television’s firmware or restoring only its audio and video settings may help. A damaged or loose port should be examined by an authorized technician rather than forced, opened or repaired without appropriate knowledge.
