One week after two World Championship medals, the 19 year old Spaniard finally takes gold.
Ljubljana
Héctor Álvarez has been crowned European Under 23 road champion after producing an aggressive long range performance in Slovenia. The Spanish rider attacked around 34 kilometers from the finish and ultimately crossed the line alone, completing one of the strongest results of his young career.
The race covered 141.8 kilometers between Ljubljana and Šenčur and included a demanding final circuit featuring the climb to Možjanca, approximately 2.1 kilometers at an average gradient above 10 percent. Álvarez used that terrain to begin separating himself from the strongest riders in the field rather than waiting for a reduced sprint.
His first move did not immediately decide the race. Several rivals eventually managed to reconnect, forcing Álvarez to reassess rather than panic. He responded by attacking again during the final phase and using the descent to reopen a decisive gap.
Poland’s Jan Michal Jackowiak finished second, 20 seconds behind the Spaniard, while Belgium’s Niels Driesen completed the podium at 32 seconds. The margins reflected how effectively Álvarez converted an aggressive strategy into a controlled solo finish.
The victory carries additional weight because of what happened only days earlier at the World Championships in Montreal. Álvarez earned silver in the road race and bronze in the individual time trial, results that confirmed his versatility but left him just short of the title he wanted most. In Slovenia, he transformed that frustration into a European championship.
The gold also improves on his bronze medal from the 2025 European Under 23 road race. At only 19, Álvarez is already accumulating results across road and time trial disciplines while demonstrating the tactical confidence required to attack well before the finish.
His development now places him among the most closely watched young Spanish riders approaching the WorldTour. Physical strength is only part of the attraction. His willingness to race aggressively, combined with the ability to recover tactically when an attack is neutralized, suggests a rider increasingly capable of creating races rather than merely responding to them.
Álvarez arrived in Slovenia carrying the disappointment of coming close to gold. He leaves wearing the European champion’s jersey.
Facts that do not bend.
