The television reboot is already building its second chapter before the first season reaches audiences.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM

HBO has announced three additional cast members for the second season of its Harry Potter television adaptation. Rafe Spall will portray Arthur Weasley, Molly Hewitt-Richards has been selected as Moaning Myrtle and Jasper Ambrose will play enthusiastic Hogwarts student Colin Creevey. Their characters enter the central narrative in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Spall’s casting creates an unexpected connection with the original film franchise. His father, Timothy Spall, portrayed Peter Pettigrew in several Harry Potter films. Rafe Spall now joins Katherine Parkinson, who plays Molly Weasley, and Alastair Stout, Tristan Harland, Gabriel Harland and Ruari Spooner as members of the expanding Weasley family.

The new actors complement several previously announced additions for the second season. Kit Harington will play the vain Defence Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart, while Lenny Rush will portray Dobby and Billy Barratt will appear as the young Tom Riddle. Bonnie Hill will assume the role of Ginny Weasley after Gracie Cochrane’s departure from future seasons because of unforeseen circumstances.

At the center of the series are Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid and Warwick Davis as Filius Flitwick.

HBO intends to devote one season to each of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels. The longer television format is expected to restore characters, subplots and details that the original films compressed or omitted. Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and executive producer, while Mark Mylod will direct multiple episodes and also act as an executive producer.

Preparing the second season before the first has premiered demonstrates Warner Bros. Discovery’s long-term commitment to the franchise. It also intensifies comparisons with the original films, whose performances remain deeply embedded in popular culture. The new production must preserve the emotional familiarity of Hogwarts while creating enough distance to justify retelling a story already known by millions.

Revisiting a familiar world only matters when the new journey reveals what the first one left unseen.
