The defending champions recovered from a spectacular opening goal to begin their title defence safely.
OSNABRÜCK, GERMANY
Harry Kane scored twice as Bayern Munich recovered from an early setback to defeat VfL Osnabrück 4-1 in the first round of the German Cup. The defending champions advanced to the next stage, although their second-division opponents briefly threatened an upset with an inspired start.
Robin Meissner gave Osnabrück the lead within the opening minutes, striking an extraordinary shot from approximately 30 metres into the top corner. The goal was impressive enough to earn congratulations from Kane and Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, but it also forced Vincent Kompany’s team to respond immediately.
Kane equalised shortly afterward from a Joshua Kimmich pass before Tom Bischof completed the turnaround in the 24th minute. Bayern controlled possession after taking the lead, but Osnabrück continued to present a counterattacking threat and remained within one goal for much of the second half.
Michael Olise finally secured Bayern’s advantage in the 73rd minute, converting the visitors’ territorial dominance into a third goal. Kane then completed his brace from the penalty spot, extending his scoring streak to seven consecutive German Cup appearances and taking his record in the competition to 13 goals in nine matches.
Bayern avoided extensive rotation against the lower-division opposition, with Kane, Luis Díaz and Olise all starting. Jamal Musiala remained unavailable while recovering from a neurological condition identified during preseason. The final score suggests a comfortable victory, but Osnabrück’s early challenge reminded the holders that knockout football can punish even a brief loss of concentration.
