Han Kang Defends Hope Without Illusion

Hope survives only when it refuses comfort.

Barcelona, April 2026. Han Kang’s first experience of Sant Jordi became more than a literary appearance; it turned into a reflection on art, darkness and the fragile discipline of remaining human. The South Korean Nobel laureate defended literature as a space that keeps people close to life, especially in a world marked by war, extremism and emotional exhaustion.

Her message avoided easy optimism. Han Kang warned that hope cannot be spoken of lightly because it is fragile, exposed and often born inside suffering. Yet she insisted that people must hold on to it with purpose, not as decoration, but as an ethical form of resistance against despair.

The author of The Vegetarian and Human Acts placed literature on the side of sensitivity. For her, reading and writing help human beings perceive the pain of others, resist indifference and avoid being absorbed by the logic of death. In dark times, art does not erase violence, but it can protect the interior space where empathy remains possible.

The Nobel Prize has changed her public visibility, but not her inner life. Han Kang said she continues to live and write as before, even if recognition now brings strangers who stop her, speak to her and sometimes want to embrace her. The global prize amplified her presence, but not the quiet discipline from which her work emerges.

Her visit to Barcelona also carried symbolic weight. Sant Jordi, with its streets filled with books and readers, offered a public scene where literature still appears as celebration rather than retreat. For a writer shaped by memory, trauma and moral attention, that collective ritual gave her words a sharper resonance.

Han Kang did not present hope as comfort. She presented it as a difficult practice, one that requires sensitivity, purpose and the refusal to let darkness define the whole human condition.
