Four Decades of Data Build a New Record of Mediterranean Change

A unified scientific archive will help distinguish natural variation from persistent climate disruption.

LA CORUÑA, SPAIN

Scientists have assembled measurements from 46 oceanographic expeditions conducted between 1976 and 2018 to create one of the most comprehensive records of environmental change across the Mediterranean Sea. The project combines observations of temperature, oxygen, pH, inorganic carbon and the age and movement of water masses.

Researchers from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography’s centres in La Coruña and the Balearic Islands collaborated with institutions in Europe and the United States to produce the database, known as CARIMED. Much of the information had remained dispersed across local archives or stored in formats that made systematic comparison difficult.

Combining historical measurements required more than collecting old records. Scientific instruments, sampling methods and research conditions changed substantially during the four decades examined. Researchers therefore subjected the information to multiple quality-control procedures intended to prevent changes in technology from being mistaken for changes in the sea itself.

The resulting database does not reduce the Mediterranean’s transformation to a single temperature figure. It allows scientists to examine interconnected processes including warming, acidification, declining oxygen, carbon storage and the renewal of deep water. These changes can alter food webs, species distribution, fisheries and the sea’s capacity to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide.

The Mediterranean is particularly vulnerable because it is almost enclosed and exchanges water with the Atlantic primarily through the Strait of Gibraltar. Long-term observations are therefore essential for separating temporary cycles from structural trends and improving projections of future conditions. CARIMED is open to the scientific community and can incorporate new measurements, turning fragmented expeditions into a continuing climate record. Its value lies not in announcing one dramatic conclusion, but in providing the evidence needed to detect gradual transformations before their ecological and economic consequences become irreversible.
