FIFA Hands Paredes 10-Match Ban After World Cup Final Brawl

Argentina’s defeat to Spain has produced consequences extending far beyond the final whistle.

ZURICH, SWITZERLAND — FIFA suspended Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes for 10 international matches following the altercations that erupted after Spain’s 1–0 victory in the 2026 World Cup final. The player was also fined $90,000 after the disciplinary investigation identified three incidents classified as assault. The punishment is among the toughest imposed on a player for misconduct during a World Cup final.

Nahuel Molina received a seven-match suspension and an equivalent fine, while Thiago Almada was banned for one game. Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches, and Spain midfielder Gavi received a one-game ban for unsporting conduct. Together, the sanctions against Argentine players and staff amount to 21 matches.

FIFA also fined the Argentine Football Association $321,000 for several violations, including team misconduct, discriminatory chants and the display of a political banner referring to the Falkland Islands after the semifinal against England. Argentina must restrict attendance to 50% for two home matches, although part of that sanction will remain suspended during a probationary period. FIFA ordered that $100,000 of the fine be invested in an anti-discrimination program.

The Argentine federation announced that it intends to appeal the decisions and could eventually take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The suspensions apply only to international fixtures and will not affect the players’ club careers. A final may last 120 minutes, but indiscipline can reshape reputations long after the stadium falls silent.
