Fernando Alonso’s future with Aston Martin is again under discussion as the team evaluates the possibility of extending his contract beyond its current term. Salary has emerged as one of the most visible elements of the talks, but the broader decision also depends on competitiveness, motivation and whether the team can provide a car capable of fighting consistently at the front.
Alonso remains one of the highest paid drivers on the Formula 1 grid. His current compensation reflects both his sporting value and the commercial impact of having a two time world champion as the central figure of Aston Martin’s project. Any renewal would therefore involve a significant financial commitment from the team, even if the final structure were adjusted to include performance bonuses or a different base salary.
The timing of the decision is especially important because Alonso is already in the final stage of his career. At this point, extending his stay cannot be separated from the question of whether Aston Martin’s technical project can deliver meaningful progress. The arrival of major engineering talent, continued investment in the Silverstone facilities and the team’s long term partnership with Honda have all strengthened expectations that the organization should become more competitive.
For Alonso, salary is unlikely to be the only decisive variable. He has repeatedly emphasized that motivation and the possibility of competing for major results matter more than simply remaining on the grid. A contract extension would therefore represent confidence not only in his own physical level but also in Aston Martin’s ability to convert investment into performance.
The team also faces a strategic calculation. Alonso brings experience, technical feedback, international visibility and a level of racecraft that remains valuable during a period of regulatory transformation. At the same time, Aston Martin must eventually plan for succession and determine how long its sporting structure should continue to revolve around a driver approaching the end of his career.
The renewal debate therefore goes beyond the headline figure attached to his salary. It is ultimately about whether Alonso and Aston Martin still believe their competitive timelines remain aligned.
