The Spaniard has turned a season of injuries into the most successful year of his career.

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina has won the ATP 250 tournament in Chengdu after defeating Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 7-6 in the final. The victory gives the 27 year old Spaniard the second ATP title of his career and confirms a major change in a season that began with physical setbacks but has evolved into his strongest year on the professional circuit.
Davidovich controlled the opening set by placing sustained pressure on Hurkacz’s serve and finally converting a break opportunity in the seventh game. He then protected that advantage to close the set 6-4. The second set was considerably tighter, with the Polish player relying on his powerful serve to prevent Davidovich from establishing the same advantage.
The decisive moment came in the tiebreak. Hurkacz moved ahead and created several opportunities to force a third set, but Davidovich saved four set points and remained composed during the most demanding sequence of the match. That ability to manage pressure ultimately separated the two players and allowed the Spaniard to close the final in straight sets.
The title carries particular significance because Davidovich had spent approximately two and a half months away from competition because of a back injury. He missed the North American hard court swing, including the US Open, before returning in Asia. Chengdu therefore represented not only a tournament victory but evidence that his physical recovery had translated immediately into competitive form.
His path to the trophy included victories over Juan Manuel Cerúndolo, Alexander Müller and Nikoloz Basilashvili before facing Hurkacz. The Polish former top ten player had himself been rebuilding his ranking after knee surgery and presented Davidovich with one of the strongest serving challenges on the tour.
Until this season, Davidovich’s career had been marked by repeated frustration in finals. He lost five ATP championship matches before finally winning his first title in Mallorca in June. Three months later, Chengdu has transformed that breakthrough into a pattern rather than an isolated result.
The Spanish player is now one of the few men to have won multiple ATP titles during the 2026 season and is moving upward again in the rankings. More importantly, his performances suggest a shift in how he handles the decisive moments that previously worked against him.
Davidovich has always possessed the athleticism and shot making ability to trouble the best players. Chengdu provided further evidence that emotional control may now be turning that potential into trophies.
