Safety reshapes the race before riders start.

Tour de France organizers have shortened Sunday’s ninth stage by 30 kilometers because of extreme heat in the Corrèze department. The route from Malemort to Ussel was originally scheduled to cover 185.5 kilometers but will now be reduced to 155.5. The start and finish locations will remain unchanged.
French weather authorities placed Corrèze under the highest heat alert as exceptionally intense temperatures affected the region. The peloton will leave part of the original route during the neutralized section and travel directly toward the revised starting point. The modification removes a portion of the opening course while preserving the final approach to Ussel.
Organizers said emergency services, health personnel, security forces and volunteers will remain mobilized throughout the day. Spectators have been advised to remain hydrated, reduce unnecessary physical activity and follow official safety instructions. The decision seeks to protect riders, teams and roadside audiences from prolonged exposure to dangerous temperatures.
The shorter distance could also alter the sporting dynamics of a stage expected to encourage breakaway attempts. With fewer kilometers available, teams may accelerate their strategies earlier and reduce the time normally used to control the race. Hydration, energy management and heat resistance will remain decisive despite the modified route.
The measure comes as Tadej Pogačar continues to lead the general classification after the eighth stage. The Tour will proceed toward Ussel under exceptional conditions that place public safety alongside competitive integrity. Climate is no longer only part of cycling’s landscape, but a factor capable of directly changing the race.
