Extreme Heat Forces Major Reduction of Vuelta’s 15th Stage

Protecting riders takes precedence as temperatures approach dangerous levels in Andalusia.

CÓRDOBA, SPAIN

Organisers of the Vuelta a España have significantly shortened the race’s 15th stage because of extreme heat forecast across the province of Córdoba. The route from Palma del Río to Córdoba has been reduced from 189.7 kilometres to 110.2 kilometres under cycling’s extreme-weather protocol.

Temperatures were expected to approach or exceed 40 degrees Celsius during the afternoon, creating risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion and reduced concentration. Those dangers become more severe after two weeks of racing, when accumulated fatigue limits the body’s capacity to regulate temperature and recover between demanding efforts.

The revised schedule postpones the ceremonial start until 2:50 p.m., with competitive racing beginning ten minutes later. From kilometre 52, the peloton will turn toward Santa María de Trassierra on the CO-3402 instead of following the original route through Villaviciosa de Córdoba. The modification eliminates almost 80 kilometres while preserving the decisive approach to Córdoba.

Race officials had already relaxed feeding regulations during stages 14 and 15, allowing teams greater freedom to distribute bottles and food from support vehicles. Riders and team representatives nevertheless continued expressing concern about prolonged exposure to intense Andalusian heat, prompting organisers to introduce the more substantial alteration after the completion of stage 14.

The shorter distance may produce a faster and more aggressive race because teams will have less time to control breakaways or gradually position their leaders. Even so, the sporting consequences remain secondary to protecting competitors, staff and roadside personnel. The decision illustrates how extreme weather is increasingly influencing race design and forcing professional cycling to adapt its traditions to changing climatic conditions.
