Sainz Calls Reaching Q2 a “Mini Victory” for Williams

The Spaniard’s modest target reveals how far the team remains from Formula One’s leading group.

MONZA, ITALY

Carlos Sainz qualified 15th for the Italian Grand Prix after taking his Williams into Q2 by the smallest possible margin. The Spaniard finished only one thousandth of a second ahead of Esteban Ocon, but grid penalties affecting other drivers will promote him to 13th for Sunday’s race.

Sainz acknowledged that simply progressing beyond Q1 currently represents a meaningful achievement for Williams. On a strong day, he believes the team can defeat one midfield rival in the opening session and perhaps another during Q2. His assessment was blunt: until the car improves, these limited gains constitute the team’s “mini victories.”

The result contrasts sharply with Pierre Gasly’s unexpected pole position for Alpine, demonstrating how closely contested Formula One’s midfield has become. Small differences in execution, aerodynamic efficiency and energy deployment can separate a place near the front from elimination in Q2. Williams was unable to transform Sainz’s progress into a realistic challenge for the top ten.

Monza’s long straights could nevertheless produce an unpredictable race under the 2026 technical regulations. Sainz explained that the cars can reach parts of the circuit with reduced electrical energy and substantially less available power before drivers activate their boost. Slipstreaming and battery management may therefore cause competitors to exchange positions repeatedly in what he described as “yo-yo” battles.

Drivers will have to decide whether to spend energy defending and attacking or preserve it for a more efficient overall strategy. For Sainz, starting 13th leaves the points within reach if Williams manages those decisions effectively and benefits from incidents ahead. His qualifying comments, however, underline the larger problem: an experienced race winner has been reduced to measuring progress through survival in the early stages of qualifying.
