Europe’s China Dependency Becomes Industrial Alarm

Autonomy collapses when supply chains obey elsewhere.

Brussels, May 2026

Europe’s debate over China has moved beyond trade imbalance and entered the harder territory of industrial sovereignty. The European Union now faces structural exposure in five strategic sectors: solar energy, critical raw materials, industrial robotics, chemicals, and textiles with wood products. These are not marginal dependencies; they sit inside the machinery of Europe’s green transition, manufacturing base and consumer economy.

The most sensitive vulnerability is hidden inside Europe’s climate agenda. Solar panels, lithium-ion batteries, rare-earth magnets and magnesium reveal a green transition built on supply chains largely controlled outside the bloc. That does not make decarbonization impossible, but it does expose a contradiction: Europe wants energy autonomy while depending on Beijing for the industrial inputs that make that autonomy viable.

The robotics surge adds another layer of pressure. Chinese industrial robots are entering Europe at accelerating speed and lower prices, forcing European manufacturers into a competition shaped not only by productivity, but by subsidy, scale and state-backed overcapacity. The risk is not simply cheaper imports; it is the silent displacement of Europe’s capacity to build the machines that build everything else.

Chemicals, textiles and wood products show that the dependency is not confined to high technology. Older sectors are also being reshaped by price collapses, import surges and delayed defensive measures. Europe can impose tariffs after damage appears, but reactive protection is not the same as strategic resilience.

The central question is no longer whether Europe trades with China. It is whether Europe can still choose its own industrial future without asking permission from the supply chains it failed to control. In that gap between market efficiency and political vulnerability, sovereignty becomes less a speech in Brussels than a factory, a mine, a robot arm and a shipment that may not arrive.
