European nations offering the biggest subsidies for electric car purchases

by Phoenix 24

When states lead on incentives, the cost barrier drops and electric mobility becomes a realistic choice—and those incentives vary widely.

Brussels, September 2025. Italy has emerged as the European country with the most generous subsidies for electric vehicle purchases, followed closely by Croatia, Poland and Greece. While direct grants dominate, several Nordic nations are proving that fiscal measures such as tax exemptions and credits also play a decisive role in boosting large scale adoption.

In Poland and Croatia, subsidies can reach up to around nine thousand euros for individuals purchasing an electric car. In Greece, similar levels of aid are complemented by additional bonuses depending on income or the replacement of an older vehicle. Latvia offers more modest benefits but includes exemptions from registration taxes and targeted tax credits.

Spain, through its Moves program, provides support of up to seven thousand euros when an old vehicle is scrapped in exchange for a new electric one, placing the country in the middle to upper tier within the European context. Luxembourg grants around six thousand euros for fully electric vehicles under certain conditions, while Portugal has reduced its previous levels but still maintains significant assistance, albeit less competitive than in earlier years.

These disparities reflect differences not only in budgetary priorities but also in political commitment, industrial strategies and levels of public demand. Countries that provide larger subsidies often pair them with policies to expand charging infrastructure, impose stricter emissions standards or offer long term fiscal incentives. States with more modest packages rely more on tax relief than on direct financial support.

For consumers, the message is straightforward: depending on the country of residence, the subsidy gap can amount to several thousand euros, often enough to determine whether the purchase of an electric vehicle becomes affordable. For Europe as a whole, the subsidy systems represent more than economic incentives; they are test cases of how public policy can accelerate the decarbonization of the automotive sector while maintaining social and financial balance.
