Eugenio Chacarra Takes Command in India as Dubai Race Intensifies

The Spanish golfer strengthens his position in a decisive championship battle.

NEW DELHI

Spanish golfer Eugenio Chacarra has taken a two-stroke lead at the DP World India Championship, reaching 14 under par before fading daylight suspended Saturday’s third round at Delhi Golf Club. His performance has strengthened his position in the tournament while adding pressure to his rivals in the season-long Race to Dubai standings.

Chacarra moved ahead of the field with another impressive display of controlled attacking golf, recording four birdies through 11 holes of his third round without dropping a shot. His total placed him two strokes ahead of fellow Spaniard Angel Hidalgo and Dutch golfer Joost Luiten.

The tournament has faced repeated interruptions because of difficult weather conditions. Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms disrupted the opening rounds, forcing organizers to revise the schedule and leaving much of the field with unfinished play.

Despite those complications, Chacarra has maintained remarkable consistency. Consecutive rounds of 67 strokes established his position at the top of the leaderboard before his latest birdies extended the advantage.

The Madrid-born golfer’s performance carries significance beyond the immediate competition. He entered the tournament among the leading contenders for the Race to Dubai title, the DP World Tour’s season-long championship.

American Patrick Reed began the week leading those standings, with Chacarra and Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy among his principal challengers. Their positions have made the tournament particularly important as the European circuit approaches its concluding events.

Reed remained at six under par when play was suspended, while McIlroy stood at four under. Both faced a substantial deficit to Chacarra, although the competition remained unfinished.

The Spanish player’s success in India also has a personal dimension. In 2025, he won the Hero Indian Open after entering on a sponsor’s invitation, a breakthrough that secured his position on the European circuit following his departure from LIV Golf.

That victory helped transform his professional trajectory. He has since developed into a regular contender on the DP World Tour, combining aggressive shot-making with greater consistency under competitive pressure.

His latest performance follows a runner-up finish at the Spanish Open, reinforcing the progress that has brought him into contention for one of European golf’s most important seasonal distinctions.

Nevertheless, the championship remains undecided. Chacarra must complete seven remaining holes of his third round before beginning the final 18 holes, creating a demanding Sunday schedule.

The accumulated workload introduces additional physical and psychological considerations. Maintaining concentration across 25 competitive holes will be essential, particularly on a course where narrow fairways and demanding rough can quickly punish inaccurate shots.

For Chacarra, the immediate objective is converting his advantage into another international victory. The broader opportunity involves strengthening his challenge for the Race to Dubai title and consolidating his position among the leading players on the European circuit.

His performance in New Delhi demonstrates how competitive consistency, technical adaptation and resilience can reshape a golfer’s career after significant professional transitions.
