Pogačar’s withdrawal opened the race, but Mas proved that leadership would require more than circumstance.

Enric Mas won the ninth stage of the Vuelta a España with a calculated attack on the Alto de Aitana, strengthening his position as race leader before the first rest day. The Movistar rider defeated Oscar Onley at the summit after 187.4 kilometres and approximately 5,200 metres of climbing.
Mas had inherited the red jersey after Tadej Pogačar abandoned the race following a serious crash on stage eight. The Slovenian had already won three stages and appeared to be moving toward overall control. His departure transformed the Vuelta from a race dominated by one rider into a more balanced contest involving Mas, Primož Roglič, Felix Gall and Onley.
Gall’s Decathlon team imposed a demanding pace on the final climb, but the Austrian’s two accelerations failed to dislodge Mas. The Spanish leader remained patient before launching his own move approximately three kilometres from the finish. Onley was the only rival initially capable of following, while Roglič limited his losses behind them.
Mas then accelerated again and defeated the British rider by six seconds. Roglič finished third at 12 seconds, with Gall arriving fourth at 18. The victory increased Mas’s overall advantage to 1 minute 18 seconds over Roglič and 1:39 over Gall. Onley stands fourth at 2:20.
The result carried particular significance because Mas has frequently been criticised for conservative racing and an inability to convert strong general-classification positions into victories. On Aitana, he allowed his rivals to expend energy first, trusted his Movistar teammates and attacked only when the tactical conditions favored him. He also delivered the finishing acceleration that had previously cost him opportunities against faster opponents.
It was Mas’s first Vuelta stage victory since 2018, when he emerged as a Grand Tour contender at 23. Since then, he has finished second in the Spanish race three times without winning the overall title. The Aitana performance does not settle the competition, particularly with four-time champion Roglič still within striking distance, but it changes the perception of Mas from accidental leader to active favorite.
Pogačar’s absence remains a major loss for the race, yet it cannot diminish what occurred on the mountain. Opportunity arrived through another rider’s misfortune, but Mas converted it through restraint, intelligence and decisive execution. The red jersey was initially transferred to him by circumstance; on Aitana, he began making it his own.
