The Vuelta leader believes the Slovenian’s relentless ambition has forced an entire generation to evolve.

Enric Mas has reflected on the influence of Tadej Pogačar after inheriting the leadership of the Vuelta a España following the Slovenian’s serious crash. The Movistar rider argued that Pogačar has changed the competitive level of professional cycling, encouraging leading contenders to race more aggressively and reconsider what is possible in stage races.
Mas experienced that pressure directly during the sixth stage, when Pogačar attacked on the Puerto del Bartolo. The Spaniard responded, closed the gap and briefly moved ahead at the summit before Pogačar recovered to win the final sprint. It was a rare moment of vulnerability for the dominant Slovenian and demonstrated that Mas possessed the form necessary to challenge him in the mountains.
The rivalry ended unexpectedly two stages later. Pogačar crashed approximately 30 kilometres from the finish and subsequently withdrew with a concussion, a displaced clavicle fracture and a stable fracture of the C7 vertebra. Mas moved into the overall lead but declined to wear the red jersey on the podium that day, holding it in his hands as a gesture of respect for his injured rival.
Mas then reinforced his legitimacy as leader by winning the mountain stage at Alto de Aitana. The victory extended his advantage over Primož Roglič and represented an important change in the Spaniard’s customary racing style. Frequently criticised for riding conservatively, he has appeared more willing to attack and accept competitive risks during this Vuelta.
Pogačar’s departure has made the race more unpredictable, but Mas’s assessment extends beyond the current standings. The Slovenian’s long-range attacks and willingness to pursue victories throughout the season have altered expectations placed on other general-classification riders. Mas now faces the challenge of applying those lessons while defending the red jersey without the man who originally defined the race.
