Enric Mas secured his first Vuelta a España title after safely completing the final stage in Granada. The Movistar leader finished 2 minutes and 15 seconds ahead of Primož Roglič, while Austria’s Felix Gall completed the podium at 2 minutes and 44 seconds.
The victory carries particular significance for Spanish cycling. Mas becomes the first home rider to win the race since Alberto Contador in 2014, ending a 12-year period in which the red jersey was dominated by international champions. His name now joins a historic list headed by Roberto Heras and Roglič, who share the record with four overall victories each.
Mas assumed the race lead after Tadej Pogačar abandoned following a serious crash on stage eight. What initially appeared to be an unexpected opportunity gradually became a demonstration of control. Movistar protected its leader through the mountains, while Mas resisted repeated attacks and limited his losses during the decisive individual time trial.
The 31-year-old had previously finished second in the Vuelta three times, making this triumph the conclusion of a long pursuit rather than a sudden breakthrough. His ability to manage pressure became especially visible during the final mountain stage at Collado del Alguacil, where he neutralized Roglič and extended his advantage before the ceremonial finale.
The result also restores Movistar to the top of its home Grand Tour for the first time since Nairo Quintana’s victory in 2016. For Spanish cycling, Mas’s success offers more than another name in the record book: it reconnects a new generation with a race whose national identity had increasingly contrasted with the absence of a domestic champion.
