Earthquake Engineering Determines Which Buildings Protect Lives

Survival begins long before the ground moves.

The recent earthquakes in Venezuela exposed a decisive reality: a building’s survival depends not only on its strength, but on how effectively it controls seismic energy. Engineers identify base isolation, energy dissipators and reinforced concrete as key technologies for reducing structural damage.

Base isolators are installed between the foundation and the building. They allow the ground to move while limiting the motion transmitted to the upper structure, helping prevent sudden deformation and collapse.

Energy dissipators absorb part of the movement generated by an earthquake and convert it into heat. Their use can reduce displacement between floors, structural forces and dangerous interior acceleration.

Reinforced concrete also remains essential because steel bars give concrete the flexibility needed to deform without breaking abruptly. However, advanced design is ineffective without quality materials, inspections and strict construction standards.
