Montreal crowned a champion while illness ended Spain’s hopes.

Demi Vollering has finally added the world road title to her career, winning the elite women’s race at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montreal. The Dutch rider prevailed after a demanding 180 kilometer race shaped by repeated climbs around Mont Royal and an elite selection that gradually reduced the field. Vollering ultimately defeated Katarzyna Niewiadoma in the final sprint, with Elisa Longo Borghini completing the podium. At 29, she secured one of the few major victories that had still been missing from her palmarès.
The race developed into a confrontation among many of the strongest riders in women’s cycling. Vollering, Niewiadoma, Longo Borghini and Marlen Reusser all remained involved deep into the decisive phase, producing a contest defined more by attrition than by one explosive attack. The repeated ascent of Camillien Houde, nearly two kilometers at approximately eight percent, progressively eliminated riders unable to maintain the pace. By the final kilometers, the race had become a direct struggle among the strongest survivors.
For Spain, the day brought disappointment. Paula Blasi arrived in Montreal as one of the country’s most important options after a breakthrough season, but she was struggling with a viral illness before the race. Her chances deteriorated further when she became involved in a crash with roughly 95 kilometers remaining. Although she escaped serious injury, Blasi eventually abandoned the race.
Her withdrawal removed one of Spain’s most promising cards from a championship that had generated significant expectations. Blasi has emerged rapidly within the international peloton during 2026, including major performances against many of the same riders competing for the rainbow jersey in Montreal. The Worlds, however, provided another reminder that form alone cannot control illness, crashes or the accumulated physical demands of a long season.
For Vollering, the outcome was the opposite. She converted years of near misses and major victories elsewhere into the rainbow jersey that had repeatedly escaped her. The title strengthens a résumé already built around stage races, classics and success at the highest level of women’s cycling.
Montreal therefore produced two very different stories. Vollering finally reached the summit she had been chasing, while Blasi left before she had the opportunity to show how far her own rise might have carried her.
