Defrosting Refrigerators Before Vacations Can Cut Household Energy Waste

Simple maintenance prevents frost from driving electricity costs higher

MADRID, Spain — July 2026.

Households preparing for extended vacations can reduce unnecessary electricity use by emptying, cleaning and defrosting their refrigerators before departure. Spain’s Organization of Consumers and Users warns that accumulated frost forces refrigeration equipment to work harder to maintain safe internal temperatures. A layer of ice measuring only three millimeters can increase the appliance’s energy consumption by as much as 30%.

Refrigerators are among the most demanding household appliances because they operate continuously throughout the day and night. Unlike washing machines, ovens or televisions, they cannot be switched on only when needed under normal conditions. Consumer specialists estimate that refrigeration may account for up to 31% of a home’s appliance-related electricity consumption.

The most effective vacation strategy depends on the length of the trip and whether food must remain stored. Families leaving for an extended period should consume or remove perishable products before disconnecting the appliance. The refrigerator should then be defrosted, washed and dried completely to prevent mold, odors and moisture damage.

After cleaning, the refrigerator and freezer doors should remain slightly open while the appliance is disconnected. This allows air to circulate and prevents humidity from becoming trapped inside enclosed compartments. Leaving the doors fully closed after unplugging can produce unpleasant smells and encourage fungal growth.

Disconnecting the refrigerator is not recommended when frozen or refrigerated food must remain preserved. In those situations, users should keep the appliance operating at an efficient temperature rather than selecting unnecessarily cold settings. A refrigerator temperature near 5 degrees Celsius and a freezer temperature around minus 17 degrees are generally sufficient for most household foods.

Lowering the temperature beyond those levels does not necessarily improve preservation. It instead forces the compressor to operate more frequently and increases electricity consumption. Vacation modes available on some modern refrigerators can reduce cooling in the main compartment while maintaining the freezer at a safe level.

Regular defrosting remains important even when a household is not planning to travel. Ice creates an insulating barrier between the cooling system and the stored products, making it more difficult for the appliance to transfer cold efficiently. The compressor must consequently run for longer periods to reach the selected temperature.

Owners should never attempt to remove ice with knives, screwdrivers or other sharp tools. These objects can puncture internal walls, damage cooling tubes or create electrical and personal safety risks. The safest method is to unplug the appliance, remove the food and allow the ice to melt naturally while towels or containers collect the water.

Cleaning the rear of the refrigerator can also improve its efficiency. Dust accumulating around condenser coils and ventilation areas restricts the release of heat produced during the cooling process. Carefully removing that dust with a brush or vacuum cleaner helps the motor operate under less strain.

The position of the appliance within the kitchen influences its consumption as well. Refrigerators should be installed away from ovens, radiators, direct sunlight and other sources of heat. Adequate space should remain around the rear and sides so warm air can circulate instead of becoming trapped.

Opening the refrigerator door repeatedly introduces warm air and forces the appliance to restore its internal temperature. Users should decide what they need before opening the door and avoid leaving it open while organizing food. Door seals should also be inspected because damaged or loose gaskets allow cold air to escape continuously.

A simple paper test can help identify an ineffective seal. The user places a sheet of paper between the door and the refrigerator frame, closes the door and then attempts to pull it out. If the paper slides out without resistance, the seal may require cleaning, adjustment or replacement.

Food arrangement also affects the circulation of cold air. Products should be distributed without blocking ventilation outlets or compressing everything into tightly packed sections. At the same time, an almost empty refrigerator may lose cold air more quickly whenever the door opens.

Hot food should not be placed directly inside the refrigerator or freezer. Introducing freshly cooked dishes raises the internal temperature and forces the cooling system to work longer. Food should first cool safely before being transferred into appropriate sealed containers.

Consumers replacing an old appliance should compare energy labels, annual electricity consumption and internal capacity. A refrigerator that is larger than the household requires will consume energy cooling unused space. More efficient models may cost more initially but can reduce electricity expenses throughout years of continuous operation.

Daily refrigerator consumption can vary considerably according to the appliance’s age, size, design and maintenance. Reported consumption may range from approximately 500 to 1,100 watt-hours per day, creating meaningful annual differences between models. Household habits, ambient temperature and the condition of the door seals can widen that gap further.

The reported 30% figure should therefore be understood primarily as the potential additional consumption caused by frost buildup, not as a guaranteed reduction for every household that disconnects its refrigerator. Actual savings depend on the condition of the appliance, the duration of the absence and local electricity prices. Nevertheless, defrosting and unplugging an empty refrigerator during a long vacation eliminates avoidable consumption and prepares the equipment for more efficient operation after the household returns.
