Deadly Storm Adam Threatens Eastern Spain With Torrential Rainfall

Red alerts and severe flooding risks disrupt Mediterranean communities.

VALENCIA

Spain is facing a dangerous Mediterranean storm as a powerful isolated weather system known as DANA Adam brings torrential rainfall, flooding risks and widespread disruption to eastern coastal communities. At least two women have died in incidents associated with the severe weather, while authorities have issued red alerts and suspended classes across several affected areas.

Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, warned that parts of southern Valencia and northern Alicante could receive between 200 and 300 millimeters of rainfall within 12 hours. Some locations could experience 60 to 90 millimeters in a single hour, creating conditions for rapidly developing flash floods.

The forecasts represent possible rainfall accumulations rather than confirmed measurements. Meteorologists have also emphasized the difficulty of predicting precisely which communities will experience the most intense downpours.

The storm has already been associated with two fatalities. In Cabrera de Mar, near Barcelona, a woman was swept away by floodwater while crossing an inundated street with her family. Her body was subsequently recovered near the port of Premià de Mar.

A second woman drowned off the coast of Sagunto, north of Valencia, after entering the sea during an orange weather alert. Authorities reported that another person accompanying her managed to reach safety.

The emergency extends beyond Valencia. Heavy precipitation threatens Alicante, Murcia, coastal Almería and the Balearic Islands, particularly Ibiza and Formentera. Mallorca is also expected to experience significant rainfall, especially along its southern coastline.

The meteorological mechanism combines a high-altitude isolated low-pressure system with moisture-laden easterly winds from the Mediterranean. Known in Spain as a DANA, this atmospheric configuration can produce intense, localized rainfall when unstable air interacts with substantial moisture.

Authorities have implemented preventive measures to reduce exposure. Several municipalities in Valencia and Alicante suspended Monday’s classes, while Ibiza, Formentera and Mallorca also announced educational closures.

Emergency notifications have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from riverbeds and drainage channels, and refrain from attempting to cross flooded roads.

Rail services have also faced interruptions, including precautionary restrictions on commuter connections in the Valencian Community. Emergency responders have attended incidents involving obstructed roads, water accumulation and storm-related damage.

The situation illustrates the vulnerability of densely populated Mediterranean coastal areas to rainfall concentrated within relatively short periods. Urban drainage systems, transport networks and low-lying neighborhoods can become overwhelmed when precipitation exceeds local infrastructure capacity.

Although Mediterranean storms have long affected eastern Spain, determining the contribution of climate change to any individual event requires dedicated scientific analysis. Warmer atmospheric conditions can increase the capacity of air to hold moisture, but this general relationship does not establish the causes or magnitude of a particular storm.

AEMET indicated that heavy rainfall could spread northward toward Tarragona before the system begins weakening. Nevertheless, changes in the storm’s position may alter the distribution of precipitation and the duration of local hazards.

For affected communities, immediate priorities remain public safety, emergency coordination and the protection of homes and essential services.

The greatest danger may emerge where intense rainfall develops faster than residents or infrastructure can respond. Even temporary improvements in weather conditions should not be interpreted as evidence that flooding risks have ended.
